Free Union Church
Interdenominational
Corner of Midway and Ocean Breeze
Ocean Beach, Fire Island
The Free Union Church is the oldest existing House
of Worship on Fire Island. Ground was broken for the laying of the
cornerstone for the Protestant Interdenominational Church in 1917. In
late August of 1918 a service of dedication of the building was held.
The church is wooden with high ceilings and currently schedules
services each Sunday from Father's Day through Labor Day from 10:45 -
11:30am. Ministers of different denominations come via ferry to preach
each week. The average attendance is about 35 worshipers per Sunday.
The Board of Trustees meets three times a year and the church's Raffle
and Cake Sale held in July is it's major source of income. Before 1998
the church was called the Union Free Church. Workers discovered the
cornerstone stone and noticed the churches name to be Free Union
Church. The trustees then voted to change the name back to it's
original.
