7/20 For those involved in Fire Island Politics. Costa Dillion,
Superintendent Fire Island National Seashore has announced his accepting
a new position in Arizona. We wish Costa the best of luck in his new

7/11 Rolling Blackouts: LIPA has installed emergency generators in lot 4
and indicates no more rolling blackouts should be expected on Fire
Island.
7/10 Driving regulations are in the process being changed on Fire Island
by FINS under a procedure called:
Negotiated Rule Making. Please read FINS news
release. Ask yourself the questions: why are only mostly "Special
Interest Groups" represented and not the majority of the homeowners /
tax payers of Fire Island. Why is the Town of Islip not participating?
Driving effects us all!
7/8 Fire Island experiences rolling power outs. Two out of the three
underwater feeder cables are out. Repairs are expected to last up to 10
days.
7/7 Fire Island / Woodhull School Reunion
brought together many alumni from 1960 onwards.

Island Association Summer Meeting at the Community House in Ocean Beach.
5/22 Welcome to the Beverage Barn in Bay Shore as a supporting Partner.
Since 1971, the Beverage Barn has provided Fire Islanders with a broad
array of softdrinks, beverages, and an astounding assortment of beers.
Customers can either browse the store at Fifth Ave. or order by phone
for delivery to Fire Island Ferries freight boat... very convenient for
those without transportation!

5/21 Congratulations to Michael Livingston (2nd Place) and to Taryn
Phelan (3rd Place), for winning in the Fire Island National Seashore
essay writing contest on the topic of "living with white-tailed deer as
neighbors". Both are students of the Woodhull School on Fire Island.
"Congratulations to all students, teachers, and parents who participated
in the contest," added Costa Dillon in a FINS news release.

4/28 Two new restaurants will await us this year on Fire Island. In
Ocean Beach it's "The Hideaway" (formerly China Beach) under new
Management. And in Robbins Rest the "Tequila Jack's Grill and Cantina"
(formerly Sandbar) serving a fusion of Caribbean and South-Western. We
are very much looking forward to sampling both.
4/25 The long-awaited first ever Fire Island School Reunion details are

4/16 Humpback whale beaches in Saltaire, Fire Island.
4/16 NPS bans Jet-Ski within 1000ft of ocean beach and 4000ft from bay
beach starting 4/22. FINS has still the option to revise the rule. Read

4/8 Michael's Restaurant in Cherry Grove burns to the ground Sunday
Morning 4am. Fire said to have started in the kitchen. Ocean Beach's
Fire Volunteers respond together with all other Fire Island Departments
to put out the fire and prevent more damage.

3/1 11th Coastal Policy Conference Invitation,
Friday, March 23, 2001. The Long Island Coastal Alliance
(LICA) will host its conference on Friday, March 23. at Southampton
College, whose curriculum in Marine and Environmental Science is
increasingly well known. Sponsors (to date) include First Coastal
Corporation and the Long Island Shore & Beach Preservation Association.
This year's conference will be of special interest to those who care
about Fire Island, as pressure grows for government to acquire
properties there. For more information

Administration know of our concerns. Here is a
sample letter to President Bush concerning Beach Erosion. Please use
the letter freely on your own letterhead for best effect.
1/6 What's New? Just the usual: some truck
accidents (somebody tried to take down FINS guard house due to icy
roads), a brawl at a FD-Holiday Party, Holiday travelers not reaching
their Fire Island destinations. Sounds almost like stuff the rest of us
landlubbers experience too.
