Ocean Beach is easy to get to. Large parts of the Island is serviced through the Ferries in Bay Shore. The 25Min. boat ride adds to the charm of the trip. And! there are no cars on the Island in the summer months (except emergency services). Without traffic, like on Saturday mornings the trip to Bay Shore is about one hour from New York. During rush hour more likely 1 1/2 to 2 hours. You can also take the train from Penn Station, or a private van service from 2nd Avenue.
